history
the greenspring avenue corridor , cheswolde area first served no. 47 streetcar prior 1950. no. 47 streetcar operated mt. washington along kelly avenue, long before there light rail stop in area. line constructed intention of being part of emory grove streetcar line, never completed extent, , later abandoned.
route 58 designation
the current routes 58 , 60 replaced route m-10 on august 24, 2008. no. 58 designation used several other bus lines served many common areas. between 1984 , 2008, no. 58 designation not used @ all, , these areas served various metro connection buses.
the original route 58, started operating in 1948, operated brighton greenspring manor (near cheswolde). merged branch of route 44 in 1973, known brighton branch. brighton branch of route 44 operated until 2005, when part of greater baltimore bus initiative, discontinued, , riders directed use route m-10, operated nearby.
another line numbered 58 started operating later in 1973 pimlico ranchleigh, in 1975, became branch of route 5.
there route 58a operated 1973 1975 reisterstown road plaza greenwood via villa julie college. service later merged route 5 special branch, operated until 1984, when metro connection services took over. 1987 2005, line known route m-12 covered route, serving greenwood, villa julie, stevenson, , caves road. line, underperformed , faced numerous cutbacks on years of operation, eliminated in 2005 part of greater baltimore bus initiative. mta stated line requiring taxpayer subsidy of $9.41 per rider. following public opposition, route m-10 extended greenspring station villa julie, , area covered route 60. after portion of route m-10 along falls road proposed elimination.
another line known route 58 operated reisterstown road plaza mt. washington 1976 1978, discontinued.
1984-1992
in 1984, in conjunction opening of baltimore metro subway, 2 new routes formed, routes p-7 , r-2. route p-7 operated between reisterstown plaza station , ranchleigh, serving fallstaff. route r-2 operated between rogers avenue station , mt. washington serving cheswolde.
in 1987, in conjunction opening of phase ii of metro, routes p-7 , r-2 redesignated routes m-10 , m-5, respectively. route m-5 briefly had service towson state university via ruxton area, later discontinued.
1992-2008
in 1992, in conjunction opening of light rail, routes m-5 , m-10 combined single line, given m-10 designation. new route m-10 served both reisterstown plaza , rogers avenue metro stations, mt. washington , falls road light rail stops, , points served both of previous routes, exception of short blocks on few streets. additionally, saturday service discontinued.
in 1998, saturday service added route m-10, , branch operated twice daily via old court road discontinued. sunday service added first time ever in 2001.
in 2005, part of greater baltimore bus initiative, service via old pimlico road discontinued, , trips modified operate mt. washington via smith avenue, weekday trips continuing greenspring station, , peak hour trips continuing villa julie college, replacing portion of route m-12, discontinued. line shortened reisterstown plaza metro station. original plan had been eliminate route m-10 service on falls road, , operate route m-10 via present route of route 58.
2008-present
on august 24, 2008, route m-10 split routes 58 , 60. route 58 operated along same routing before reisterstown plaza station intersection of smith , greenspring, via greenspring new quarry lake development. route 60 formed operate along full length of clarks lane without deviations, , serve points of route m-10 east of greenspring.
in february 2009, route 58 modified serve mt. washington following complaints quarry lake residents on buses.
on july 3, 2011, extension of service white marsh mall on route 58 replaced route 15 s service white marsh, allowing easier access there north. extension travels via falls road, northern parkway, belair road, , white marsh boulevard. service operates hourly, except during weekday peak periods every other trip operates between reisterstown plaza metro station , overlea.
