native american roots

the rogers park area developed on once convergence of 2 native american trails, known rogers avenue , ridge boulevard, predating modern metropolitan chicago. pottawatomi , various other regional tribes settled in rogers park season season. name of indian boundary park west of rogers park reflects history pottawattomie park near clark street , rogers avenue.


settlers

in 1809, karthauser inn established stagecoach stop , tavern. 1 of original settlers (1836) of area phillip rogers, operated toll gate beside home @ ridge , lunt avenues , traded , worked local tribes.


during period 1844 1850 arriving settlers started farms along ridge in western portion of rogers park, avoiding flooded lowlands east. in 1870 rogers son-in-law, patrick i. touhy, sold 100 acres land speculators, including john farwell, luther greenleaf, stephen lunt, charles morse, , george estes; of whom contributed names streets in area. additional purchase of 125 acres in 1873 these speculators touhy formed rogers park building , land company. in 1873, chicago & northwestern railway completed service line through area , constructed station @ greenleaf ave. population 200 , post office opened in july 1873. 5 years later, voters agree incorporate village under name of rogers park.


becoming part of chicago

on april 29, 1878 rogers park incorporated village of illinois governed 6 trustees. in 1885, chicago, evanston & lake superior railroad, predecessor of chicago, milwaukee & st. paul railroad, built combination freight , commuter line through eastern rogers park on present l right-of-way stop @ morse avenue. 1893, population 3500, north shore electric railroad expanded service area, , village of rogers park annexed chicago.


the rogers park women s club opened first library in 1894. in year, great fire of rogers park destroyed business district.


neighborhood growth

by 1904 population had grown 7,500. northwestern elevated line extended wilson (4600n) howard street (7600n). st. ignatius college moved lakefront in 1912, , changed name loyola university in 1915. successive generations brought vast cultural changes former village. 1930 population 57,094 making rogers park 1 of chicago s densely populated areas. chicagoans began move new planned communities in north suburbs 1930s, ushered in migration of german, english, irish, , jewish families rogers park. devastation in europe following world war ii, many additional immigrants found way chicago , rogers park neighborhood. growing , vibrant hispanic community has grown along clark street since 2000.


for decades, of neighborhood has been within 49th ward of city of chicago (the terms used interchangeably), misconception. ward covered of edgewater , went far south hollywood in 1960s, while 50th ward extended east ashland avenue (in areas late 1990). but, because of redistricting, part of rogers park within 40th ward, , 49th ward encompasses part of west rogers park.
