duklja medieval serb state encompassed territories of present-day southeastern montenegro, bay of kotor in west bojana river in east, , sources of zeta , morača rivers in north. first mentioned in 10th– , 11th century byzantine chronicles, vassal of byzantine empire until became independent in 1040 under stefan vojislav (fl. 1034–43) rose , managed take on territories of earlier serbian principality, founding vojislavljević dynasty. between 1043 , 1080, under mihailo vojislavljević (r. 1050–81), , son, constantine bodin (r. 1081–1101), duklja saw apogee. mihailo given nominal title king of slavs pope after having left byzantine camp , supported slavic uprising in balkans, in son bodin played central part. having incorporated serbian hinterland , installed vassal rulers there, maritime principality emerged powerful serb polity, seen in titles used rulers ( prince of serbia , of serbs ). however, rise short-lived, bodin defeated byzantines , imprisoned; pushed background, relative , vassal vukan became independent in raška, continued fight against byzantines while duklja struck civil wars. between 1113 , 1149 duklja centre of serbian–byzantine conflict, members of vojislavljević protégés of either fighting each other power. duklja incorporated crown land of grand principality of serbia ruled vukanović dynasty, subsequently known zeta, remaining until fall of serbian empire in 14th century.
