brixton opened brixton , south stockwell in 1862 london, chatham , dover railway (lc&dr) serve affluent victorian suburbs of south london. services ran moorgate london victoria via holborn viaduct railway station, camberwell new road , brixton , south stockwell grosvenor road, following opening of link northeastwards london blackfriars via loughborough junction in 1864. station connected lc&dr s branch crystal palace high level via nunhead afterwards, section (via denmark hill) becoming part of modern-day catford loop line.


the station served trains on main line towards herne hill. denmark hill line platforms closed in april 1916 wartime economy measure , have been demolished except short section of platform. however, line remains in regular , frequent use both freight , passenger services.
