the village founded in 1816 rafał bratoszewski. in 1820, rajmund rembieliński called aleksandrów 1 of better towns in poland . bernard von schuttenbach author of town planning project. in order gain sympathy of government, bratoszewski called town after ruling russian emperor alexander romanov. resulted in aleksandrów gaining city rights in 1822. after bratoszewski s death in 1824 kossowski family took on town.


after 1832, town began fall economically overwhelmed nearby towns of pabianice, zgierz , Łódź. in late 19th century , 20th century, many knitting companies founded in aleksandrów, called cradle of polish stocking industry , gained nickname sock-city among citizens. trade still main 1 today. in 1910, town gained tram connection Łódź, discontinued in 1991.

from beginning, aleksandrów town of 3 cultures , 3 religions. there protestant descendants of german knitters, jews in trade and, of course, catholic poles worked craftsmen , in factories. until 1945, richest , numerous ethnic group germans. jewish population in 1900 1,673. jewish, aleksandrów important religious centre - seat of hasidic tzadikim of alexander dynasty founded rabbi yechiel dancyger (1828–1894). rabbi chanokh heynekh hakohen levin, second rebbe of ger hasidim held court until death in aleksandrów in 1870.


in 1869, during partitions of poland, aleksandrów lost city rights lasting more 60 years. these rights regained in 1924 in newly reborn poland. currently, seat of aleksandrów Łódzki county. in september 2006, first international convention of aleksandrów citizens held.
