history

route 59 has been operating since february 17, 2008. prior date, no. 59 designation never used bus operating on reisterstown road. other bus route in baltimore transit history had no. 59 designation colgate shuttle, service operated during rush hour 1948 1952. reisterstown road corridor between pikesville , owings mills has history of being served many other bus routes , streetcar lines.


1916 1932

service on reisterstown road provided no. 5 streetcar line, ran emory grove patterson park, providing transit service offered along parts of reisterstown road. no. 5 streetcar had northern point of baltimore streetcars. @ time, owings mills area minimally developed.


1932 1948

in 1932, no. 5 streetcar shortened pikesville. service between pikesville , emory grove provided bus route m (no relationship m-lines).


1948 1959

in 1948, no. 5 streetcar converted bus operated. new line identified no. 5/7 line.


1959 1984

the no. 7 bus line provided service on parts of reisterstown road glyndon pennsylvania , north avenues, continued along pennsylvania avenue downtown baltimore , canton along same route present no. 7 line. after no. 7 line shortened in 1984 in favor of shorter metro feeder buses, no. 7 line continued operate along full route until 2001, when metro connection buses started operate 7 days week, 24 hours day.


1984 1987

following opening of baltimore metro, new series of feeder buses developed bring riders metro stations. during time, route p-4 operated along virtually same route route 59, exception of deviation owings mills metro station, @ time, did not exist. additionally, route p-1 overlapped along reisterstown road, operated reisterstown.


1987 1997

during years 1987 1997, route m-9 operated on present route of route 59. line started running reisterstown plaza owings mills metro subway station @ times, trips before 9 continuing owings mills town center. after 9 am, service between metro station , town center provided shuttle identified route m-17, no relationship current route m-17 serves other parts of owings mills area.


in june 1992, route m-17 shuttle discontinued, , service provided extending trips on routes m-9 , m-16 owings mills town center. @ same time, route m-15, duplicated service on route m-9 , several other routes, discontinued. section of route m-15 not covered other bus lines branch of selected trips business center @ owings mills. replace service, 6 daily m-9 trips extended location. currently, service not provided route 59, route m-17.


1997 2008

in 1997, route m-9 combined route m-16. single line formed operated between reisterstown plaza metro subway station , reisterstown, trips operating via owings mills town center. new route m-17 formed provide service on special branches.


in 1999, destination signs of buses bound reisterstown marked glyndon in order avoid confusion in opposite direction marked reisterstown plaza station .


in september 2001, metro connection buses, except operated weekdays only, expanded operate 7 days week first time. schedules of @ time, including route m-9, matched of saturday service.


2008 2017

on february 17, 2008, m-9 line split 2 new routes: nos. 59 , 56. these routes resemble former original routes m-9 , m-16, respectively. done in order improve schedule adherence on both routes.


on august 30, 2009 route m-17 discontinued , service along red run boulevard replaced extending peak hour service on route 59 red land court. these trips not enter owings mills mall parking lot (mill run circle), pass owings mills mall on red run boulevard.


2017 present

baltimorelink renamed route 59 route 89, , expanded route have southern terminus @ rogers avenue station.
