in late 18th , 19th centuries, ostrowiec emerged main center of polish industry. following idea of stanislaw staszic, promoted industrialization of kamienna river valley, based on local deposits of coal , iron ore, numerous plants opened in area. in 1837 - 1839, klimkiewicz steelworks opened (named after founder antoni klimkiewicz), later came known ostrowiec works (zaklady ostrowieckie). plant became second largest in congress poland, , in vicinity, various enterprises opened, workers establishment.

ostrowiec 1 of main centers of revolution in kingdom of poland (1905–1907). on december 27, 1905, so-called ostrowiec republic established, , 2 weeks, town , county ruled polish socialist party, headed ignacy boerner. republic ended after arrival of 2 infantry regiments of imperial russian army. ostrowiec works severely damaged during world war i, , on november 3, 1918, newly established polish authorities took control on ostrowiec. in second polish republic ostrowiec developed, due location in central industrial area. town belonged opatow county, , before world war ii population app. 30,000. in 1937 officially named ostrowiec swietokrzyski. earlier on, names ostrowiec kielecki , ostrowiec nad kamienna had been used.
the wehrmacht captured town on september 8, 1939. of jewish community of app. 11,000 murdered in holocaust, in 1943-1944. during second world war, ostrowiec lively centre of resistance activity against nazi occupation. there underground weapons production , independent underground press. german troops withdraw westwards on january 16, 1945.
ostrowiec continued development in postwar period. in 1954, several villages annexed, including denkow, had once been town. in 1970s, new metallurgical plant opened. in 1990s, metallurgical industry experienced big crisis. steel plant bought spanish celsa group.
