the entrance poole harbour east, via poole bay , english channel. entering harbour, heading west, on either side shores of studland beach (south west) , sandbanks (in particular, haven hotel , peninsula, north east). directly ahead several islands, largest of brownsea island.
following harbour anti-clockwise, heading north-east passes built residential settlements of poole including lilliput , parkstone (east). 4 miles (6.4 km) north-west of entrance of harbour entrance poole quay , holes bay (see below). directly west of main part of poole hamworthy. continuing anti-clockwise, heading west around harbour settlements of upton , wareham, outlet of river piddle. area of water within harbour known wareham channel , includes other places such rockley sands.
continuing anti-clockwise, heading south majority of islands within harbour several small channels , inlets. west arne bay , wych channel. majority of land in area heathland, , there few settlements, opposed eastern part of harbour. directly south long island, round island , ower bay. green island, furzey island , brownsea island (in order) east, newton bay , brands bay (this area has several oil wells) south. area of water known south deep. continuing anti-clockwise comes entrance harbour , poole bay, studland beach south-east.
lytchett bay lies north of harbour , flows through narrow channel near edge of suburb of hamworthy.
holes bay
holes bay tidal inland lake lies north of poole harbour. designated harbour quiet area. entrance bay small inlet main harbour. spanning inlet 2 bridges: poole bridge , new twin sails bridge; latter officially opened in 2012 , cost around £37,000,000. access holes bay vessels draft greater 2 metres (6.6 ft) possible when bridges lifted, occurs several fixed times daily , on request. new bridge intended reduce traffic jams ensuring @ least 1 bridge open vehicular traffic @ 1 time.
the bay contains pergins island, , south western railway line runs west east on causeway across bay. north of bay upton country park
holes bay location of royal national lifeboat institution (rnli) training school, attached poole headquarters. uses of bay include fishing, kayaking , small leisure craft. large marina known cobbs quay on west side of bay. on east side bay runs parallel a350.

green island directly south of furzey island.
long island near arne peninsula.

gigger s island in west of harbour near river piddle outlet.

pergins island in north of harbour in holes bay.
stone island lies between brownsea , studland. ridge of gravel , sand, possibly remains of old recurved shingle spit, visible between high tides, , such danger sailors. gradually being submerged rising sea-level.
