biography
early years
smith , family migrated australia in 1959 , settled, initially, in st albans western suburb of melbourne. in 1962 or 1963 smith member of maltese band on percussion. other blues bands joined included smokey hollows in 1965, time smith sales clerk allans records store. joined adderley smith blues band (1966–1968) on vocals , harmonica alongside kerryn tolhurst (guitar, mandolin). smith conscripted army part of national service during vietnam war @ holsworthy, new south wales 2 years 1968 1970. upon discharge, briefly joined sundown tolhurst left join carson.
1971–1973: carson
carson had formed in january 1970 , blues-boogie band influenced group canned heat, during 1971 smith replaced founder john capek, providing vocals , harmonica. other members included greg lawrie (guitar, slide guitar), ian ferguson (bass, vocals), tony lunt (drums) , ian winter (guitar). after released single travelling south / moonshine in august 1971, ferguson left replaced successively barry sullivan , garry clarke; mal logan (keyboards) joined later year. carson performed @ first sunbury rock festival in january 1972. following easter, played legendary set @ mulwala pop festival, alongside canned heat. smith spent part of 1972 recording 2 solo singles: goin on down end of world released in may 1972 , yesterday rained released in february 1973. kept carson record boogie, part 1 / boogie, part 2 reached no. 30 on national charts in september 1972. followed debut album, blown on harvest records produced rod coe, reached no. 14 in december.

the dingoes formed in melbourne in april 1973 smith s old bandmate kerryn tolhurst. original line-up included tolhurst (ex-adderley smith blues band, sundown, country radio) (singer, songwriter, guitars), chris stockley (ex-campact, axiom) (guitars), john strangio (bass), john lee (ex-blackfeather (drums)) , smith (vocals, harmonica). band formed fuse rhythm , blues australian bush music described country rock. best performed singles way out west , boy on run , 1974 debut self-titled album dingoes peaked @ no. 18. performed @ sunbury rock festivals in 1974 , 1975, making smith 1 of few artists had performed @ 4 festivals. dingoes rellocated usa 1976 next 2 albums, 5 times sun in 1977 , orphans of storm in 1979. while recording latter album management team, headed peter rudge, had been devastated when members of fellow signing lynyrd skynyrd killed in plane crash in october 1977; dingoes split in february 1979. smith had returned australia in late 1978.

1990s–2000s: workshops , duos
smith has delivered numerous workshops on songwriting, harmonica , vocals schools within victoria. considers himself lyricist, songwriting technique typically involves writing lyrics in prose form, music written (usually else), lyrics changed suit music. smith believes lyrics should , not sing along to.
