for episode, composer bear mccreary had make sense of several character themes had created throughout first season. centipede theme, known clairvoyant theme, introduced in pilot episode represent centipede organisation , mysterious leader. introduction of paxton john garrett in t.a.h.i.t.i. , mccreary wrote garrett theme representing cocky, confident and...militaristic energy . when turn, turn, turn reveals garrett clairvoyant, mccreary had bit of thematic mess on hands. clairvoyant theme , garrett theme musically dissimilar, , representing same person! complicating matters, point in episode, every mention of hydra being accompanied quotations of big s.h.i.e.l.d. (or victoria hand) theme, because target of coulson’s suspicions. moment garrett admits loyal hydra had make sense of these themes , redefine musical rules moving forward. mccreary decided retire big s.h.i.e.l.d. theme (introduced in hub ), helped fact hand killed in episode. mccreary made centipede/clairvoyant theme serve theme hydra, given organisation s introduction in episode , ties centipede , garrett in story. garrett s theme continues represent character in scenes him, mccreary finding paxton’s performance after being revealed clairvoyant [to be] more fun , energetic. so, theme still fits him perfectly, shows different side of personality.

mccreary introduced new melody, simple piece guitar , rhythm section , in scene garrett , other members of hydra taken away while series main , recurring characters react revelation of betrayal. on piece mccreary said, i’m not sure we’re going hear melody again, haven’t bothered give name. works in singular moment. final scenes, in ward reveals true allegiance killing hand, mccreary used deep, horrifying synth tones , , producers did not want clutter these scenes themes, melodies or emotions. wanted emphasize pure shock, , leave audience feeling dazed @ final unexpected turn.
