in months leading december 2003, there speculation whether president chen choose vice president annette lu running mate. polls had consistently showed chen better candidate such taipei county administrator su tseng-chang or kaohsiung mayor frank hsieh , many of dpp s popular lawmakers had petitioned chen consider candidate. after several weeks of public infighting between various factions of dpp, chen formally nominated lu running mate on december 11. backed pan-green coalition.


the existence of 2 tickets on ballot led several protest movements against both coalitions - notably alliance of 1 million invalid ballots - asking people disqualify ballots on purpose. partly responsible high number of invalid votes compared 2000 election.


kuomintang , people first party

in february 2003, kmt , pfp agreed run combined ticket representing entire pan-blue coalition lien chan president , james soong vice president. campaign emblem lien-soong campaign two-seat bicycle blue figure in first seat , orange figure in second. there initial doubts pairing since believed 2 men disliked each other - during 2000 campaigns, lien accused soong of positioning family graves interfere lien s feng shui forcing lien reposition graves. additionally, thought difficult 2 men agree upon run president , run vice president. though soong polled ahead of lien in 2000 , thought more charismatic lien, ended running vice president. pfp s poor showing in 2001 legislative election may have played role. initially, believed lien-soong ticket sure win, given both men garnered combined 59.9% of vote in 2000.
