great experiment

in 1970, harvard , radcliffe began experiment co-educational housing. 150 harvard students river houses (including former dean of harvard college benedict gross) switched places 150 radcliffe students quadrangle. ten years later experiment taken logical conclusion, last all-male dorm, straus hall in harvard yard, went co-ed. today, harvard dormitories, including 3 houses of quadrangle, house both men , women.


birth of cabot house

in 1961 radcliffe college began organize brick buildings of radcliffe quad residential colleges in style of harvard. these houses styled north, south, , east, in reference cardinal directions of building clusters.


cabot house (originally named south house) formed in 1970 when east house , original south house merged. anna maria abernathy held title of head of house, , , husband fred served cabot’s first house masters (now faculty dean). in 1971, mary bunting, president of radcliffe, began tenure house master.


bertram hall, radcliffe’s first permanent dormitory, built in 1901 , donated mrs. david pulsifer kimball in memory of son. in 1906, eliot hall, donated mrs. kimball, built in honor of grace hopkinson eliot, wife of harvard president charles w. eliot. alexander wadsworth longfellow, jr, designed both bertram , eliot halls. barnard hall built in 1912 , named augusta barnard , husband. briggs hall, named radcliffe’s second president, lebaron russell briggs, constructed in 1923, , cabot hall, named in honor of ella lyman cabot, member of radcliffe governing board 1902 1934, followed in 1937. sixth building, whitman hall, completed in 1911 , named sarah wyman whitman, creator of 2 of stained glass windows in memorial hall , member of radcliffe governing board several years. faculty deans’ residence located @ 107 walker street. residential wood-frame house @ 103 walker street senior tutor’s residence.


while outside of brick dormitories has remained unchanged, renovations house 19 years ago , dining area in summer of 2002 provide new facilities , newly configured suites more in line vertical hallway arrangements of river dormitories.


shield

the cabot house shield adopted when south house became cabot house, in 1984. shield coat of arms used boston brahmin cabots after whom house named, though, ironically, shield not heraldic achievement; coat of arms belongs french family chabot, whom boston cabots have no relation.


cabotoix have unique affection shield, red fish in particular. inspiration common house cheer, go fish! —a play on popular card game. cabotoix feature coat of arms on various apparel, including polo shirts, rugby shirts, , hooded sweatshirts. standard coloration used, or inverse.


the house office has antique copy of cabot shield had been hanging in dining hall before renovations. oddly, shield s colors drastically different, although shield still features same general design , motto: field black , perch silver, , crest white scallop shell. while origin of scheme unknown, interesting note these colors identical of trumbull college, cabot s sister college @ yale.

the house colors, red , gold, derived house shield; black, 1 of radcliffe s colors, unofficial color, featured in house apparel.
