pavol jozef Šafárik (paul joseph schaffarik, pavel josef safarik) (1795–1861) – poet, professor, polyhistor
jakob jakobeus (1591–1645) – poet, historian, priest, , writer

linguists, humanists , historians

anton bernolák (1762–1813) – lower nobleman, jesuit, author of first slovak language standard (in 1780s), based on western slovak dialects.
Ľudovít Štúr (ludevít Štúr) (1815–1856) – best known role in development of modern slovak language. in 1844 suggested central slovak dialect used literary language of slovaks, , in 1846 codified new language standard in nauka reči slovenskej. [theory of slovak language]
adam františek kollár (adam franz kollar) (1718–1783) – lower nobleman, historian , jurist rose ranks of imperial-royal court councilor , chief imperial-royal librarian of empress maria theresa. coined term ethnology.
janko matúška (1821–1877) - author of slovak national anthem.
martin hattala (1821–1903) – linguist.

inventors , engineers

jozef murgaš (1864–1929) – inventor of wireless telegraph (forerunner of radio). murgas rotary-spark-system allowed faster communication, through use of musical tones. patented new invention, listed wireless telegraphy apparatus , more inventions in field. these patents go on form foundations invention of radio. devised system improved morse code. other patents include spinning reel (for fishing), wave meter, electric transformer, magnetic detector, , engine producing electromagnetic waves.
aurel stodola (1859–1942) – engineer , professor, enabled construction of steam , gas turbines (around 1900), constructor of movable artificial arm (the stodola arm) in 1915
john dopyera (ján dopjera) (1893–1988) – inventor of music instruments, invented dobro resonator guitar

ján bahýľ (1865–1916) – military engineer, inventor of motor-driven helicopter (four years before bréguet , cornu). bahýľ granted 7 patents in all, including invention of tank pump, air balloons combined air turbine, first petrol engine car in slovakia (with anton marschall) , lift bratislava castle.
Štefan banič (1870–1941) – inventor of military parachute , of first actively used parachute
ivan alexander getting (1912—2003) - american physicist , electrical engineer, credited (along bradford parkinson) development of global positioning system (gps).
