zhaohui receives surrender of dawachi @ ili 1755

in 1752, dawachi , khoit-oirat prince amursana competed title of khan of dzungars. amursana suffered several defeats @ hands of dawachi , forced flee small army protection of qing imperial court. yongzheng emperor s successor, qianlong emperor, pledged support amursana, recognized qing authority; among supported amursana , chinese khoja brothers burhān al-dīn (zh) , khwāja-i jahān (zh). in 1755, qianlong sent manchu general zhaohui (zh), aided amursana, burhān al-dīn , khwāja-i jahān, lead campaign against dzungars. after several skirmishes , small scale battles along ili river, qing army, led zhaohui, approached ili (gulja) , forced dawachi surrender. qianlong appointed amursana khan of khoid , 1 of 4 equal khans – displeasure of amursana, wanted khan of dzungars.

amursana rallied majority of remaining oirats rebel against qing authority. in 1758, general zhaohui defeated dzungars in 2 battles: battle of oroi-jalatu , battle of khurungui. in first battle, zhaohui attacked amursana s camp @ night; amursana able fight on until zhaohui received enough reinforcements drive him away. between battles of oroi-jalatu , khurungui, chinese under prince cabdan-jab defeated amursana @ battle of khorgos (known in qianlong engravings victory of khorgos ). @ mount khurungui, zhaohui defeated amursana in night attack on camp after crossing river , drove him back. commemorate zhaohui s 2 victories, qianlong had puning temple of chengde constructed, home world s tallest wooden sculpture of bodhisattva avalokiteśvara , hence alternate name, big buddha temple . afterwards, huojisi (zh) of turfan submitted qing empire. after of these battles, amursana fled russia (where died) while chingünjav fled north darkhad captured @ wang tolgoi , executed in beijing.
