race weekend

a1 grands prix of nations took place on three-day period, friday sunday. teams given 5 sets of dry weather slick tires, , 2 sets of wet weather treaded tires per weekend. however, if weather extreme, team given more wet weather tires @ expense of slick tires. race weekend started 2 one-hour practice sessions held on friday, , on saturday morning. two-hour qualifying session took place on saturday afternoon, , 2 races took place on sunday. primarily, 3 practice sessions car setup , track familiarisation before official competition began saturday qualifying. 3 different drivers participate in 3 practice sessions; driver elected qualifying or 1 of races required have taken part in @ least 1 such practice session.


qualifying

a1 grand prix used unique qualifying format, began @ 14:00 local time on saturday of race weekend, determine grid lineup sunday s races, sprint race , main race. qualifying period split four, ten-minute sessions. each car permitted 3 laps per session, including laps required leaving pits, , re-entering it. allowed 1 lap set competitive time. there five-minute break between sessions, added total of 55 minutes qualifying. grid sprint race set based on cars fastest time either first or second session. grid feature race determined same way, using sessions 3 , four. however, if there red flag due accident on circuit, timing end of qualifying continued run.


sprint race

the sprint race used grid determined in sessions 1 , 2 of previous day s qualifying session, , held in afternoon. race began rolling start, , duration maximum of 24 minutes plus 1 additional lap. additionally, each team had make 1 mandatory pit stop between laps 4 , eight. drivers permitted 4 uses of powerboost during sprint race.



feature race

the feature race used grid determined in sessions 3 , 4 of previous day s qualifying session, , held mid-afternoon. race began standing start, , race of approximately 180 kilometres, maximum time limit of 69 minutes plus 1 lap. teams had make 2 mandatory pit stops during feature race, 1 between laps 8 , sixteen, , during pit window, not announced until first window has closed. drivers permitted 8 uses of powerboost during feature race.


pit stop

each team had complete 3 compulsory pit stops on course of race weekend – 1 during sprint race, , 2 during feature race. during pit stop, 4 tyres on car had changed. total of 8 mechanics used during stop, however, 4 allowed touch car , none of (save so-called lollipop man directed car pit) present in pit lane before car came complete halt. refuelling not permitted; infringements of these rules or of pit-lane speed limit resulted in imposition of drive-through penalty.


at end of season 3, a1gp released results of season s pit stop times. although having never won race, a1 team australia had fastest pit crew of teams.


scoring

unlike other forms of auto racing, drivers did not score points individually; instead points earn ascribed national team. means teams change drivers between rounds, necessary because drivers had commitments in other formulae, , still accumulate points score.


points awarded first ten places amounts changed during series run: 15 winner, 12 second place, 10 third place, 8 fourth place, 6 fifth place, 5 sixth place, , on 4, 3, 2, , 1 point tenth place. points awarded in different way sprint race: 10 winner, counting down 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, , 1 point eighth place. in addition, 1 point awarded team set fastest single lap time in either sprint or main race. cash prizes awarded.
