the 2 halls become winthrop house built in same year , share many attributes. both four-story u-shaped buildings surrounding courtyards, gated open side facing charles river. both have fifth floor living spaces @ central axis only. facade of gore hall based on sir christopher wren s late-17th-century garden wing of hampton court palace.


the present gore hall maintains memory of christopher gore, had bequeathed funds construction (1841) of prior gore hall, demolished time present gore hall built. contains winthrop house dining hall in below-street-level space @ center. in corresponding spot, standish hall contains winthrop house library, holds largest private collection of john singleton copley portraits. when standish still stand-alone dormitory freshmen, library dining hall.


gates

two gates @ opposite ends of yellowwood courtyard, both built in 1914, connect gore , standish halls. front entrance, facing mill street, winthrop gate. house shield welded in front.


on river side stands fly club gate, english baroque structure named after 1 of harvard s male-only final clubs members provided grant build it. panther symbol of fly club centered within ironwork above entry, , inscribed dedication: friendships made in college fly club in gratitude has built gate.
