design , description
the la galissonnière-class ironclads designed faster, more heavily armed versions of alma-class armored corvettes henri dupuy de lôme. used same central battery layout predecessors, although battery lengthened 4 meters (13 ft 1 in) provide enough room work larger 240-millimeter (9.4 in) guns. two-propeller layout adopted in unsuccessful attempt reduce ship s draft.
la galissonnière measured 76.62 meters (251 ft 5 in) between perpendiculars, beam of 14.84 meters (48 ft 8 in). had mean draft of 6.55 meters (21 ft 6 in) , displaced 4,654 metric tons (4,580 long tons). ship had metacentric height of .926 meters (3 ft 0.5 in). crew numbered between 352 , 382 officers , men.
propulsion
la galissonnière had 2 wolf vertical compound steam engines, each driving single 3.8-meter (12 ft 6 in) propeller. engines powered 4 oval boilers. on sea trials engines produced total of 2,370 indicated horsepower (1,770 kw) , ship reached 13.08 knots (24.22 km/h; 15.05 mph). la galissonnière carried 500 metric tons (490 long tons) of coal allowed ship steam 3,240 nautical miles (6,000 km; 3,730 mi) @ speed of 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph). ship-rigged 3 masts , had sail area around 1,707 square meters (18,370 sq ft).
armament
the ship mounted 4 of 6 240-millimeter modèle 1870 guns in central battery on battery deck. other 2 240-millimeter guns mounted in barbettes on upper deck, sponsoned out on sides of ship, abaft funnel. la galissonnière s secondary armament of 4 120-millimeter (4.7 in) guns mounted on upper deck. replaced 6 100-millimeter (3.9 in) guns in 1880. armor-piercing shell of 19-caliber 240-millimeter gun weighed 317.5 pounds (144.0 kg) while gun weighed 15.41 long tons (15.66 t). had muzzle velocity of 1,624 ft/s (495 m/s) , credited ability penetrate nominal 14.4 inches (366 mm) of wrought iron armour @ muzzle. guns fire both solid shot , explosive shells.
the ship received 4 37-millimeter (1.5 in) hotchkiss 5-barrel revolving guns in 1878. fired shell weighing 500 g (1.1 lb) @ muzzle velocity of 610 m/s (2,000 ft/s) range of 3,200 meters (3,500 yd). had rate of fire of 30 rounds per minute. la galissonnière received several towed harvey torpedoes.
armor
la galissonnière had complete 150-millimeter (5.9 in) wrought iron waterline belt, approximately 2.4 meters (7.9 ft) high laid on 650 millimeters (26 in) of wood. sides of battery armored 120 millimeters (4.7 in) of wrought iron backed 520 millimeters (20 in) of wood , ends of battery closed bulkheads of same thickness. barbette armor 120 millimeters (4.7 in) thick. unarmored portions of sides protected thin iron plates.
