marco pantani attacked on stage alpe d huez. ullrich, 9 minutes ahead of pantani overall, limited losses 47 seconds. pantani attacked again on morzine stage , won, while ullrich again limited losses. in final time trial, won abraham olano, ullrich extended lead on virenque , following day became first german win tour de france. @ 23, ullrich fourth youngest winner of tour since 1947. 2 weeks later, won hews cycling classic in hamburg. further 2 weeks later ullrich beaten davide rebellin in sprint in gp suisse. chosen sports person of year in germany in 1997.
