weddle started 2007 season strong safety behind clinton hart. known team s dimeback playing in 2nd/3rd , long situations, along being backup holder on special teams. speculated used instead of current holder mike scifres in situations fake field goal or point attempt occur threat run or throw ball in situations. chargers led nfl in takeaways season 48. on october 28, 2007, weddle recorded first nfl regular season interception against houston texans. weddle saw plenty of action during rookie season, playing dime safety , finished rookie season 48 total tackles, 1 sack , 1 interception along 6 pass deflections while playing in 1 of talented secondaries in nfl.


2008

at start of 2008 season, weddle officially named starting free safety alongside clinton hart signed long-term contract extension in offseason @ strong safety. on september 22, weddle made first interception of season against new york jets in week 3 monday night football game against quarterback brett favre. finished season 127 tackles, 1 sack, , 1 interception.


2009

in 2009 season, weddle had 82 tackles (68 solo), 5 tackles-for-loss 14 yards, 1.5 sacks, 2 interceptions 44 yards, 1 touchdown, , 7 passes defensed in 13 games.


2010

weddle’s all-around game improved each year , in 2010, received first all-pro honors when selected ap’s all-pro second team after chargers finished season ranked first in nfl in pass defense. weddle helped turn around pass defense 2 seasons earlier ranked second-to-last in league. within months, chargers rewarded weddle new five-year, $40 million contract in july 2011. largest contract ever free safety made high expectations.


2011

he had breakout 2011 season 88 tackles , career-high 7 interceptions. helped clinch 2 early-season back-to-back wins late fourth-quarter interceptions, becoming third chargers defender in previous 20 years. beginning of pro bowl season in weddle tied nfl lead career-high 7 picks. weddle voted pro bowl, accompanied selection chargers’ defensive player of year. weddle intercepted 2 passes in pro bowl, 1 of resulted in touchdown after lateral, while breaking game-high 3 passes , tying second 5 tackles en route 59–41 win afc.


2012

in 2012, weddle once again playing @ elite level 1 of best safeties in league. voted teammates chargers’ valuable player, @ end of 2012 season. weddle garnered team’s top honor after leading squad 111 tackles. tacked on first-team all-pro honors cbssports.com , pro football weekly & professional football writers of america, , second-team all-pro honors associated press.


2013

in 2013, weddle again proved himself 1 of elite safeties in league. elected second pro bowl, along teammate philip rivers. made second-team all-pro honors second year in row associated press. weddle played 16 games 4th-straight year, collecting 115 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, 9 passes defended, , 2 fumble recoveries. however, important contribution came on special teams. chargers needing win advance postseason, weddle called fake punt on 4th , 2 chargers own 28 yard line, gaining enough yards first down. chargers go on kick game-winning field goal later in drive. weddle became chargers defensive player of year 2nd time in career, winning prestigious award in 2011.


2014

against jacksonville jaguars, weddle intercepted blake bortles , returned 17 yards. in week 8 against denver broncos, eric weddle caused forced fumble did not recover. in week 16 against 49ers, eric weddle made big play forcing quinton patton fumble, after rushing 15 yards, leading chargers victory. in 2014, weddle selected third pro bowl in 4 seasons, , named first-team all-pro. led chargers in tackles 114, going along 1 interception, 2 forced fumbles, , 8 passes defended.


2015

on december 20, 2015, weddle stayed out during halftime watch daughter perform in halftime show against miami dolphins. weddle did not ask permission remain on sideline watch daughter , not present in locker room. team spokesman bill johnston said mandatory players in locker room during halftime. result, weddle fined $10,000. weddle s agent, david canter, said planned file grievance nfl players association , said felt disrespected way things handled. had skipped voluntary workouts last offseason show displeasure chargers not willing give him contract extension.


furthermore, weddle placed on injured reserve groin issue on december 28, 2015. occurred against wishes.
