patterns of iva

the linking , brushing (selection) concept of iva can used between different types of variables in dataset. pattern should use depends on aspect of correlations in dataset of interest.

feature localization

brushing data points set of dependent variables (e.g. temperature) , seeing among independent variables (e.g. space or time) these data points show up, called feature localization . feature localization, user can identify location of features in dataset. examples meteorological dataset regions have warm climate or times of year have lot of precipitation.

local investigation

if independent variables brushed , corresponding connection dependent view, termed local investigation . makes possible investigate characteristics of example specific region or specific time. in case of meteorological data, instance discover temperature distribution during winter months.

multivariate analysis

brushing dependent variables , watching connection other dependent variables called multivariate analysis. example used find out if high temperatures correlated pressure brushing high temperatures , watching linked view of pressure distributions.

since each of linked views has 2 or more dimensions, multivariate analysis can implicitly uncover higher-dimensional features of data not readily apparent e.g. simple scatterplot.
