tazkira sadat-i-simanania, compiled 13th-century scholar , poet swaleh reshi, gives name of place shampora . syed hussain simnani later renamed kulgam (kul clan , gram village in sanskrit). simnani said have invited hazrat amir kabir mir hamdani kashmir, poets including sheikh noor-ud-din noorani , lal ded. these poets , disciples manifested composite culture or kashmiriyat, promoting , encouraging religious , cultural harmony when viewed heretics other asiatic countries.


the form of administration shair shah suri s reign led creation of tehsil during mughal rule, through aegis of sheikh hamza makhdoom. had jurisdiction encompassing doru, banihal, gulabgarh, , shopian. after time, constituent units including pulwama, shopian, , reasi attained status of district.
