daily news building, john mead howells , raymond hood, architects, rendering hugh ferriss. landmark building housed paper until mid-1990s.


from founding, based @ 23 park place, block city hall, , 2 blocks park row, traditional home of city s newspaper trade. cramped conditions demanded larger space growing newspaper.


from 1929 1995, daily news based in landmark skyscraper @ 220 east 42nd street near second avenue, designed john mead howells , raymond hood. paper moved 450 west 33rd street in 1995, 42nd street location still known news building , still features giant globe , weather instruments in lobby. (it model daily planet building of first 2 superman films). former news subsidiary wpix-tv remains in building.


the third headquarters of daily news @ 450 west 33rd street straddled railroad tracks going pennsylvania station. building world headquarters of associated press.


in june 2011, paper moved operations 2 floors @ 4 new york plaza in lower manhattan. sixteen months later, structure severely damaged , rendered uninhabitable flooding hurricane sandy. in immediate aftermath, news operations conducted remotely several temporary locations, moving office space @ jersey city printing plant. in 2013, operations moved rented space @ 1290 avenue of americas near rockefeller center—just 4 blocks north of rival new york post. staff returned permanent 4 new york plaza location in november 2013.
