the 80-acre (320,000 m) site in perris, california @ corner of today s perris boulevard , morgan street. due inadequate water supply conduct primary subjects @ school, better location sought. 1901 site in city of riverside selected, @ corner of magnolia avenue , jackson street. on july 19, 1901, cornerstone laid new school building of sherman institute. perris indian school remained in operation until december 1904 when remaining students transferred riverside. named after congressman james s. sherman, helped establish funding school in 1900.


the mission revival style architecture considered novelty when school built, , city promoted school 1 of landmarks visit tourists. meet earthquake standards, of original school buildings demolished during 1970s, , new structures built in place. california native tribes required pay demolition , new buildings.


during 2008–09 school year, sihs administration removed more 30 staff facility, upsetting students. students protested, no effect. officials stated there not enough bia funds pay employees had been let go. same year, traditional ceremonies school s annual spring pow-wow replaced christian prayers.
