Geography Perim
perim crab-shaped, 5.63 km (3.5 mi) long , 2.85 km (1.77 mi) wide. has surface area of 13 km (5.0 sq mi) , rises altitude of 65 m (213 ft). perim encloses deep , comparatively large natural harbour on southwestern coast. fishing village of mayyun located @ bottom of bay.
the island divides 32 km (20 mi) wide bab-el-mandeb two: large strait, average width of 17 km (11 mi), , small strait, varying 5 km 2.5 km (3 mi 1.5 mi) in width. large strait deep water varying 100 fathoms or more in middle channel 3 6 fathoms close coastal reefs. depth of small strait varies 12 15 ½ fathoms , free navigational changes in fairway strong , irregular tidal streams make navigation hazardous. there has been frequent shipwrecks in vicinity of perim, particularly in small strait.
the absence of fresh water on island has been 1 of major difficulties impeding permanent settlement. although there occasional heavy rains, there may stretches of 8 months or more without rain; long-term average rainfall (in 1821–1912) 60 mm per year. vegetation scarce.
