at age of 19, having heard of open casting call new girl group through then-boyfriend, lopes moved atlanta audition. starting female trio called 2nd nature, group had been renamed tlc, derived first initials of members @ time: tionne, lisa , crystal. things did not work out crystal jones, , tlc s manager perri pebbles reid brought in damian dame backup dancer rozonda thomas third member of group. preserve band s original name, rozonda needed name starting c, , became chilli, name chosen lopes. bandmate tionne watkins became t-boz, derived first letter of first name , boz (slang boss ). lopes renamed left eye after compliment man once told attracted because of left eye. lopes emphasized nickname wearing pair of glasses left lens covered condom, in keeping group s promotion of safe sex, wearing black stripe under left eye, , getting left eyebrow pierced.


the group arrived on music scene in 1992 album ooooooohhh... on tlc tip. 4 singles, sold 6 million copies worldwide, leading group becoming household name. 2 years later crazysexycool released, selling on 23 million copies worldwide, , cemented tlc 1 of biggest female groups of time. tlc s third album, fanmail, released in 1999 , sold on 14 million copies worldwide. title tribute tlc s loyal fans , sleeve contained names of hundreds of them thank .


during recording of fanmail, public conflict began amongst members of group. in may 1999 issue of vibe magazine, lopes said, ve graduated era. cannot stand 100 percent behind tlc project , music supposed represent me. in response lopes comments, watkins , thomas stated entertainment weekly lopes doesn t respect whole group , left eye concerned left eye. in response, lopes sent reply through entertainment weekly issuing challenge watkins , thomas release solo albums , let public decide greatest member of tlc:
