after long run @ paramount television, concluded end of happy days in 1984, producers tom miller , bob boyett moved new home @ lorimar productions, partnership between 2 , studio commenced on october 1 of year. miller , boyett had ideas venturing hour-long comedy/dramas lorimar, @ time decline in popularity of half-hour situation comedies perceived. however, time began @ lorimar, nbc had struck ratings gold cosby show, , sitcoms in vogue once again. pair, launching new miller-boyett productions nameplate sans longtime partner eddie milkis, re-shifted focus sitcoms.


for first lorimar project, miller-boyett had valerie harper in mind starring vehicle. harper struck deal producers , announced return series television, first time since conclusion of rhoda in december 1978. developed during 1984–85 season , picked nbc, series known conception close home. had same format made air, of modern mother juggling many responsibilities while husband away. latter role in particular, nbc still wanted visual , personal appeal despite limited scenes, , tapped days of our lives star josh taylor play harper s airline pilot husband. taylor s part-time status on sitcom enabled him continue role chris kositchek on days.


additionally, popular teen star jason bateman, available after cancellation of nbc series s move, , danny ponce, had been playing jason avery on lorimar s knots landing previous 2 seasons, added 2 of harper s kids. newcomer jeremy licht rounded out brood. broadway actress christine ebersole cast harper s best friend, strong enough presence star play off of. series feature more genuine sense of realism, miller , boyett had in mind dramedy concepts. however, combined smart, character-driven humor harper aiming for, , then-boyfriend (later husband) tony cacciotti given ample creative control on new series.


the pilot close home shot in summer of 1985, , aside few changes called during testing, given green light nbc backup premiere fall (to replace new september half-hour entry have failed). subsequent episodes slated shoot when jeremy licht came down chicken pox, derailing shooting , ultimately, premiere. gave creative team time tweak format, , when licht again, production resumed changes nbc approved of. initial season of episodes progressed shooting, nbc , harper gave common temptation of star power, , retitled series valerie, debuted on march 1, 1986.

directing credits included james burrows, peter baldwin, howard storm, , beginning in 1988, jason bateman, youngest-ever director registered directors guild of america (at age 18). jason s father kent bateman directed episodes.

the theme song, through years, performed roberta flack , composed charles fox. lyrics written stephen geyer. through years covered death metal band cannibal corpse , performed @ live concerts.


fox, holdover miller , boyett s paramount years, principal score composer first 2 seasons, bruce miller taking on seasons 3 through six. miller/boyett series lorimar/warner bros. era have not used songwriting, composing , underscore talents of jesse frederick , bennett salvay of run. frederick , salvay, however, did score selected episodes of series: first in november 1986, in april 1987 (which co-scored steven chesne) , third in spring of 1988. conversely, valerie miller/boyett series have featured scoring fox during producers lorimar era.


the series utilized 4 different credit fonts during 6 seasons. originally, principal typeface credits in orange, black-embossed, italicized bookman old style font. usage ceased when second season of valerie went production; later showed on 3 more lorimar programs: 1989 nbc sitcom departed, , abc s family matters , getting (the latter 2 of direct sister shows valerie, miller/boyett series). during second season of valerie, font used in title sequence , first , final scenes gold, condensed version of cooper black font. second season closing credits in windsor font (also seen on in family , s boss?). seasons 3 through 6 switched traditional cooper black font, set in yellow , used in credits.


as case perfect strangers, first season did not use familiar miller/boyett productions logo set in century 751 type; miller/boyett productions byline appeared in show s main font instead. proper logo made debut in second season, main byline accompanied on side larger m/b in same font. near end of season two, byline dispensed m/b , , continued appear without rest of series. (the full version of miller/boyett logo, m/b , reappear stand-alone vanity plate on shows 1996 1998.)
