the settlement arose in late 12th century, first mentioned in 1304 deed. bornstedt manor comprised present-day gardens of sanssouci, acquired great elector frederick william of brandenburg in 1664. prussian king frederick william ceded estates potsdam orphanage; son king frederick great had pay significant compensation before building sanssouci palace 1744 onwards. had water basin erected atop hill north of park in order supply fountain system, ultimatively failed due lack of expertise. frederick had reservoir decorated artificial ruins , hill called ruinenberg.
from 1750 bornstedt fields use proving ground of prussian army, chagrin of local cotters, until king frederick william iv after accession throne in 1840 repurchased estates. had bornstedt manor reorganised according concepts of peter joseph lenné , turned model agricultural business. court architect ferdinand von arnim built norman tower atop ruinenberg hill , had bornstedt manor house , church redesigned in italian style according plans friedrich ludwig persius. king had village church rebuilt friedrich august stüler in 1854.

in 1864 king william of prussia (german emperor 1871) handed bornstedt estate on son, crown prince frederick , wife victoria, daughter of queen victoria. princess royal continued agricultural business model farm, had manor rebuilt , son wilhelm ii attended bornstedt village school. upon death of emperor frederick in 1888, however, victoria left bornstedt , retired friedrichshof castle in kronberg im taunus.
in 1928 crown estates of bornstedt , sansouci incorporated potsdam, former bornstedt municipality followed in 1935 (by personal decree of hermann göring). became military base of wehrmacht infantry regiment 9 potsdam , several barracks erected in vicinity. bornstedt cemetery enlarged heroes grove , decorated sculpture walter lemcke. after world war ii, military facilities used soviet army until 1993, today many buildings belong fachhochschule potsdam college campus.
in 2001, bornstedt fields site of federal horticultural exhibition (bundesgartenschau). present-day volkspark includes potsdam biosphere.
