the village of wimborne st giles rests within family estate itself. ashley family arrived in dorset, wiltshire, owned manor of ashley, since 11th century. first ancestor reside in wimborne st giles robert ashley (born c. 1415), fifth great grandfather of anthony ashley cooper, 1st earl of shaftesbury.


built in 1651, family seat of st giles house has fallen disrepair , has been unoccupied 60 years. in 2001, st giles house recorded on register of buildings @ risk, grade listed building, indicating neglect , decay. buildings recorded on grade list include of exceptional interest, considered internationally important .


discussions regarding future use of st giles house , estate have been resumed following inheritance 12th earl of shaftesbury. work on house began in 2011 , since restoration has won several national awards including 2014 georgian group awards restoration of georgian country house, 2015 royal institute of chartered surveyors (rics) award building conservation, 2015 historic houses association/sotheby’s restoration award , historic england angel award, best rescue of historic building or site . has helped secure future of house family home , venue wide range of activities including weddings, concerts , corporate events.
