walter selected oakland raiders in third round (69th overall) of 2005 nfl draft. walter spent 2005 rookie season third-string quarterback raiders behind kerry collins , backup quarterback marques tuiasosopo. walter played in 2 preseason games because of groin injury, 1 required surgery @ conclusion of 2005 season.

entering 2006 season, walter expected compete starting quarterback position tuiasosopo , aaron brooks. after poor performance brooks in week 1, walter replaced him late in game. next week, walter once again replaced brooks due poor performance including 2 fumbled snaps. following announcement brooks miss 2–4 weeks injured pectoral muscle, walter started week 4 game against cleveland browns. on october 22, led raiders first win of year, defeating arizona cardinals. however, brooks returned in november , re-took starting quarterback job walter, start 1 more game in 2006. after season, raiders drafted jamarcus russell first overall pick in 2007 nfl draft. walter begin season raiders third quarterback, veterans daunte culpepper , josh mccown seeing time on walter, active 1 game in 2007. walter listed no. 2 quarterback heading december 9 game against green bay packers. walter entered packers game in fourth quarter in relief of mccown , completed 5 of 8 passes 38 yards raiders lost packers score of 38-7. walter inserted game instead of rookie jamarcus russell, had made nfl debut week earlier, due head coach lane kiffin not wanting play russell when offense performing poorly. apparently coldest weather russell had ever been in.


with russell taking starting job in 2008, walter continued serve raiders third quarterback. active 2 games in 2008, starting 1 posting 43.8 completion percentage. walter released raiders on july 30, 2009, finishing oakland career 52.3 completion percentage.

walter signed new england patriots in august 2009 after team waived quarterback matt gutierrez. released on september 4.
