the wing first organized @ fairchild air force base, washington in january 1951 90th bombardment wing , equipped boeing b-29 superfortress. while organizing, attached 92d bombardment wing, commander served commander of 90th wing. in february, part of reorganization of strategic air command wings, 90th wing s 90th bombardment group reduced paper status , squadrons attached wing operational control. in june 1952, organization, designed permit wing commander focus on wing s combat units , maintenance necessary support combat aircraft, formalized dual deputy organization , group inactivated , squadrons assigned wing.


in march 1951, wing moved forbes air force base, served training unit. in may, began serving operational training unit b-29 aircrews , mechanics of newly-activating units. 376th bombardment wing first new superfortress wing trained 90th, activating on 1 june 1951. in october, combat ready , moved barksdale air force base, louisiana, permanent base. day 376th wing departed, 308th bombardment wing activated , began training, lasted until moved hunter air force base, georgia in april 1952. 310th bombardment wing last b-29 unit trained @ forbes. departure schilling air force base, kansas in september 1952, b-29 operational training mission ended.


in june, wing added duty replacement training unit, providing individual training aircrew being assigned existing far east air forces b-29 units during korean war. in november 1952 began training replacement crews rb-29 reconnaissance model of superfortress , shoran personnel strategic air command (sac). these training activities continued through november 1953.

the wing began fly strategic reconnaissance missions in september 1953. following year, replaced rb-29s jet boeing rb-47 stratojet, first b-47e arriving on 25 june, although crews had begun training in march. 1 year later, wing deployed unit eielson air force base, alaska 5 may until 31 august 1955, performed final mapping of alaska. assignment of 90th air refueling squadron in 1955, wing began fly air refueling missions reconnaissance flights. in may 1958, wing returned training mission serving combat crew training wing rb-47 aircrews until inactivated on 20 june 1960. wing s personnel , equipment transferred 40th bombardment wing, moved forbes on paper schilling air force base, kansas same day. 90th air refueling squadron reassigned 40th wing upon wing s arrival @ forbes.

the wing again organized in july 1963 @ francis e. warren air force base, wyoming 90th strategic missile wing. lgm-30b minuteman missiles of wing replace sm-65 atlas missiles of inactivating 389th strategic missile wing. replacement minutemen more displaced , hardened atlases replaced.


initially, wing supervised missile facility construction until july 1964, individual squadrons activating between october 1963 , july 1964 missile launch facilities became operational. wing equipped 200 lgm-30b minuteman i, equipped single reentry vehicle. beginning in june 1973, minuteman missiles began replaced lgm-30g minuteman iiis, carry 3 reentry vehicles, 400th strategic missile squadron becoming first minuteman iii squadron in wing. changeout completed october 1974. however, in 2001 , in compliance strategic arms reduction treaty, these missiles limited single reentry vehicle


the wing supervised lgm-118 peacekeeper personnel training , facility preparation beginning jun 1985. peacekeeper, carry ten independently targeted reentry vehicles, operational wing s 400th strategic missile squadron on 30 december 1986. peacekeeper system continued in operation in addition wing s minuteman missiles until september 2005, when retired , 400th squadron inactivated.


although remained component of twentieth air force, starting in 1992, wing saw series of changes in major command art of. when sac inactivated on 1 june 1992, wing, along other combat missile units, became part of air combat command. on 1 july 1993, after being redesignated 90th space wing, , idea take advantage of similarities between missile , other space missions, wing became part of air force space command. on 1 december 2009, wing , other missile wings reunited global bomber force under air force global strike command.
