by 1891 millionaire oscar martin carter , group of investors established omaha , south texas land company. company purchased 1,756 acres (7.11 km) of land , established infrastructure, including alleys, parks, schools, streets , utilities, worth $500,000 united states dollars. when houston heights founded, streetcar suburb of houston attracted people did not wish live in dense city. had own municipality until city of houston annexed heights in 1919.
