during late august 2008, tropical wave emerged off coast of africa , tracked westward across atlantic ocean. after several days, associated area of low pressure gained deep convection , organization. on august 28, while east-northeast of northern leeward islands, low formed tropical depression eight. later day, attained tropical storm status, , such named hanna national hurricane center. @ time, low-level center of circulation partially exposed on western edge of convection, indicating westerly wind shear.
tracking westward under steering current of large ridge north, convective pattern began redevelop late on august 28. since forecast, models predicted storm weaken , move southwestward due outflow associated nearby hurricane gustav. despite this, storm began entering favorable environment, , forecast intensify. upper-level low had been producing wind shear moved away system, though light shear continued. @ same time, low-level center once again became separated convection, confined cyclonic banding feature in eastern half of circulation. remained weak moved erratically westward while east of bahamas on august 30. due influence of hurricane gustav s large circulation, hanna took sharp southerly turn , slowed down drift while located north of turks , caicos islands. on september 1, hanna drifted south-southwest, convection increased , storm began intensify. later day around 1:30 pm edt, air force reconnaissance aircraft found winds within hanna supportive of hurricane strength, , national hurricane center upgraded hanna hurricane. on september 2, strong wind shear in association hurricane gustav began affect hanna , storm downgraded tropical storm on september 3. hanna sharply turned northward, causing additional damage in haiti. on course of next 3 days, hanna slighted northwestward towards bahamas, before turning abruptly north. september 5th, hanna turned westward towards carolinas.
early on september 6, 2008, hanna made landfall near south carolina-north carolina border. system became extratropical cyclone moved atlantic canada on september 7 , raced across north atlantic, sweeping west of great britain on september 10 before turning north , becoming absorbed stronger extratropical cyclone between iceland , greenland late on september 12.
