in late 1940s atomic clock developed , several laboratories began atomic time scales. new time scale known coordinated universal time (utc) adopted internationally in 1972. based on readings of atomic clocks, updated periodically in accordance time variations in earth s rotation addition or deletion of seconds (called leap seconds). time act 1974 defines new zealand standard time 12 hours in advance of utc.


in 2011, new zealand dependency of tokelau moved time zone forward 24 hours, skipping 30 december.
