the original st. mary s settlement laid out according baroque town plan, settlers living closely in town church, stores , homes close , outlying farms, fields, woods , orchards laid out in grid or strips of land. however, residents of st. mary s city later preferred live on tobacco plantations in surrounding countryside. settlement meant capital of new maryland colony , province of maryland.
