biography
early life

ye born on 28 october 1894 in wu county, jiangsu province. name @ birth ye shaojun (葉紹鈞), , courtesy name bingchen (秉臣). father worked bookkeeper landlord , lived modest life. when 6 years old, entered mediocre school primary study. followed father work. travelled around city , experienced lives of poor.


in 1907, ye entered caoqiao secondary school (草橋中學). after graduation, worked primary school teacher, before being dismissed school in 1914. finding himself unemployed, devoted himself entirely writing classical chinese novels, published in “libailiu magazine” (《禮拜六》 “saturday magazine”), until found work chinese teacher of school set shanghai commercial press (商務印書館上海印刷廠). @ same time, became editor of primary textbooks of shanghai commercial press in 1915.


ye had been living in era of instability, including 1894 sino-japanese war, hundred days reform, , later sphere of influence (列強割據). life experiences affected sense of nationalism , contributed later career journalist , educator.


career in literary movement

throughout life, ye worked lot literary movement. under influences of may fourth movement in 1919 commonly known new culture movement, ye indulged himself in literary career. participated in student organization called xinchao (“new tide society” 新潮社 1919-1920) of peking university, , started publishing fictions, poems, prose, literary criticism , scripts of drama etc. ye editor in pushe (樸社, 1923). in 1921, ye, mao dun , zheng zhenduo founded earliest literary society of new literature movement, wenxue yanjiu hui , (文學研究會 association literary studies ), advocating realism art rejecting principle “art art s sake”. in 1936, ye, mao dun , hong shen (洪深) established chinese literature , art society (zhongguo wenyi jia xiehui 中國文藝家協會). in 1941, became editorial committee of teaching literature , history ” (wenshi jiaoxue 文史教學). ye 1 of establishers of literary alliance anti-japanese imperialism (文藝界反帝抗日大聯盟).


political life

ye responsible number of posts in authority. following communist revolution, ye served vice-director of general administration of press , publication (出版總署副署長), president of people education publication (人民教育出版社社長), , vice-minister of education. elected committee of fifth standing committee of national people s congress, national committee of fifth chinese people s political consultative conference (cppcc), , chairman of china association promoting democracy.


ye died in beijing on 16 february 1988 @ age of 94.
