biography
early life

nguyễn trãi hải dương province, born in 1380 in thăng long (present day hanoi), capital of declining trần dynasty. under brief hồ dynasty, passed examination , served time in government. in 1406, ming force invaded , conquered vietnam. under occupation, ming china attempted convert vietnam chinese province , ruthlessly quashed rebellions.

in 1417, nguyễn trãi joined rebel leader named lê lợi, resisting occupation mountainous region in thanh hóa province south of hanoi. nguyễn trãi served chief advisor, strategist , propagandist movement.


the war of independence leading defeat of ming , inauguration of lê dynasty lasted 1417 1427. 1417 until 1423, lê lợi conducted classic guerilla campaign bases in mountains. following negotiated truce, rebels extended control on whole of thanh hóa , on southern province of nghệ an. ming sent series of military reinforcements in response bolster positions. in 1426, army of chinese general named wang tong arrived in red river delta. however, vietnamese forces able cut supply lines , control countryside, leaving chinese presence totally isolated in capital , other citadels. during period, nguyễn trãi sought undermine resolve of enemy , negotiate favorable peace sending series of missives ming commanders. in 1427 2 other chinese relief armies entered vietnam , defeated. wang tong sued peace. numerous chinese prisoners of war given provisions , allowed return china. nguyễn trãi penned famous proclamation of victory.


later life

after war nguyễn trãi elevated lê lợi exalted position in new court internal intrigues, sycophantic machinations , clannish nepotism meant not appointed regent upon king s death. instead position bestowed upon lê sát, ruled regent on behalf of young heir lê thái tông.


at point during regency of lê sát, having found life @ court increasingly difficult, nguyễn trãi retired country home north of hanoi in tranquil mountains of chí linh, enjoyed poetry writing , meditation. today, visitors can visit site large shrine of remembrance, covering foot of mountain top erected honour national hero. site of nguyễn trãi s house still exists, tiled floors remain original. close ancient buddhist temple, has stood there several centuries before time.
