john bryan bowman founded agricultural , mechanical college of kentucky (a&m), publicly chartered department of kentucky university, after receiving federal support through morrill land-grant colleges act in 1865. courses offered @ ashland, henry clay estate. 3 years later, james kennedy patterson became first president of land-grant university , first degree awarded. in 1876, university began offer master s degree programs. 2 years later, a&m separated kentucky university, transylvania university. new school, lexington donated 52-acre (210,000 m) park , fair ground, became core of uk s present campus. a&m male-only institution, began admit women in 1880.
in 1892, official colors of university, royal blue , white, adopted. earlier color set, blue , light yellow, adopted earlier @ kentucky-centre college football game on december 19, 1891. particular hue of blue determined necktie, used demonstrate color of royal blue.
on february 15, 1882, administration building first building of 3 completed on present campus. 3 years later, college formed agricultural experiment station, researches issues relating agribusiness, food processing, nutrition, water , soil resources , environment. followed creation of university s agricultural extension service in 1910, 1 of first in united states. extension service became model of federally mandated programs required beginning in 1914.
