redd+ climate change mitigation measure

deforestation , forest degradation account 17-29% of global greenhouse gas emissions, reduction of estimated 1 of cost-efficient climate change mitigation strategies. regeneration of forest on degraded or deforested lands can remove co₂ atmosphere through build-up of biomass, making forest lands sink of greenhouse gases. redd+ mechanism addresses both issues of emission reduction , enhanced removal of greenhouse gases.

reducing emissions

emissions of greenhouse gases forest land can reduced slowing down rates of deforestation , forest degradation, covered first 2 of redd+ eligible activities. option form of reduced impact logging in commercial logging, under redd+ eligible activity of sustainable management of forests.

enhancing removals

removals of greenhouse gases (specifically co₂) atmosphere can achieved through various forest management options, such replanting degraded or deforested areas or enrichment planting, letting forest land regenerate naturally. care must taken differentiate between purely ecological process of regrowth , induced or enhanced through management intervention.

redd+ , carbon market

in 2009, @ cop-15 in copenhagen, copenhagen accord reached, noting in section 6 recognition of crucial role of redd , redd+ , need provide positive incentives such actions enabling mobilization of financial resources developed countries. accord goes on note in section 8 collective commitment developed countries new , additional resources, including forestry , investments through international institutions, approach usd 30 billion period 2010 - 2012.

the green climate fund (gcf) established @ cop-17 function financial mechanism unfccc, including redd+ finance. warsaw framework on redd-plus makes various references gcf, instructing developing country parties apply gcf result-based finance. gcf finances redd+ programs in phase 1 (design of national strategies or action plans, capacity building) , phase 2 (implementation of national strategies or action plans, demonstration programs). finalizing approach redd+ results-based payments.

redd+ eligible inclusion under corsia, international civil aviation organization s market-based greenhouse gas offset mechanism <http://www.icao.int/environmental-protection/pages/market-based-measures.aspx>.
