the genus halitherium has had confusing nomenclatural history. coined johann jakob kaup on basis of premolar oligocene (rupelian) of southern germany, kaup himself mistakenly stated premolar, in opinion, gehort zu hippopotamus dubius cuv., unaware h. dubius junior synonym of primitive sirenian prototherium minima, while simultaneously coining genus , species name pugmeodon schinzii same specimen. part, renowned german paleontologist christian erich hermann von meyer included type specimen of halitherium schinzii in composite species halianassa studeri, hypodigm included type specimens of metaxytherium medium , protosiren minima miocene-age maxilla , skeleton molasse basin in switzerland. later, kaup synonymized pugmeodon halitherium creating new combination halitherium schinzii, , name halitherium became universally accepted oligocene halitheriine material europe. because halitherium based on misidentified type species , due widespread use of halitherium, sirenian specialist daryl domning petitioned iczn designate pugmeodon schinzii type species of halitherium, , proposal approved commission in 1989, making pugmeodon junior objective synonym of halitherium in line current concept of halitherium introduced kaup himself.


apart h. schinzii, there have been 5 other species of halitherium have considered valid in recent papers: h. alleni, h. antillense, h. christolii, h. bellunense, , h. taulannense. however, halitherium taulannense represents distinct, unnamed genus, while h. antillense nomen dubium, , h. christolii , h. bellunense have been renamed lentiarenium , italosiren respectively, leaving h. alleni species can safely considered congeneric h. schinzii.


voss (2013, 2014) dismisses halitherium nomen dubium virtue of being based on non-diagnostic remains. voss based opinion on type species, h. schinzii, being nomen dubium, holotype fossil, isolated molar, having no diagnostic value. , 2017 study found specimens traditionally assigned halitherium schinzii 2 separate species, 1 of takes name halitherium bronni krauss, 1858. because halitherium dubious, h. bronni has been re-assigned kaupitherium.
