in 1993, kreis played during summer raleigh flyers of usisl. in summer of 1994, returned louisiana play new orleans riverboat gamblers, of usisl. after finishing collegiate eligibility in 1994, kreis signed first professional contract raleigh flyers in spring of 1995.


dallas burn

on august 1, 1995, kreis signed contract major league soccer league prepared inaugural season. kreis drafted forty-third overall dallas burn in fifth round of mls inaugural draft. scored first goal in burn history. in 1999, kreis first american-born player named league mvp after led league in points , goals, , registered first 15-goal, 15-assist season in league history. five-time all-star led team in goals 5 times , in points 4 times.


on june 26, 2004, kreis scored eighty-ninth league goal against d.c. united, moving past roy lassiter top of league s all-time goal-scoring chart. kreis remained mls time goalscoring leader more 3 years until jaime moreno surpassed record on august 22, 2007. ended ninth mls season career totals of 91 goals , 65 assists 247 points, plus added 4 goals , 2 assists in playoffs. remains dallas all-time leader in games played (247), goals (91), assists (65), , points (247).


real salt lake

on november 17, 2004, kreis traded expansion team real salt lake, becoming first player in club s history. kreis scored first goal in salt lake s history in second match, 3–1 loss los angeles galaxy. in doing so, became first player in league history 2 different teams, scored inaugural goal dallas in 1996 well.


on august 13, 2005, became first player in mls history score 100 career league goals, during 4–2 loss kansas city wizards. achievement unexpected observers, out of 1996 class included other candidates eric wynalda, brian mcbride, or joe-max moore; kreis had never been considered particularly dangerous goalscorer , had lead league in scoring once, in 1999.


kreis left unprotected in 2006 mls expansion draft real salt lake , subsequently chosen toronto fc. reacquired salt lake on november 17, 2006, club sending partial allocation money toronto in exchange.


he retired player on may 3, 2007, take on head coach, finishing 108 career goals.
