boat race 2003 close finish line s. thomas (nearside) win 1/2 foot.


royal college first began rowing in 1953 first school in ceylon so, first captain alavi mohomed. s. thomas college began rowing few years later.


in years follow idea of race between 2 schools agreed upon , in 1962 1st boat race held on beira lake , royalist s led l.a.w. sirisena beat thomians led c.n. sirimanne 1 boat length , first holders of boat race trophy. s. thomas won first boat race in 1964 beating royal 3 lengths.


in 1966, 1st royal thomian regatta held line-up of 6 events. coxed fours, coxed pairs, single sculls in 2 categories senior , junior.


between 1973 , 1979 regatta not held due dispute between 2 schools. series revived in 1980 , continues present except in 2006 when regatta not held.


in 2007 royal college led maalik aziz created history winning races , winning overall trophy margin of 40 points nil. royal college created new record timings events including lowering boat race trophy record 8 secs 3 mins 11 secs.


in 2008, history written yet again although in different manner every record being broken result of tough competition on either side. though s thomas college led manil salgadoe , devaan hallock made of records including boat race(3.06), royal college managed scrape in 2 records stay in count(junior coxed fours, junior b coxed fours).


in 2011, royal college rowing team led skipper chirath karunanayake added few more records books. among records set were; a) biggest winning margin royal 48-04 (2011) , subsequently broken in 2016 royal college winning 50-02) new overall course record , first ever sub-three minute race, senior 4 - 2:55 (crew consisting of chirath karunanayake (b), ajmal sideek (2), jehan smarasekera (3), sanjiva jayasuriya (s) , coxed pasan ranaweera) c) junior 4 - 3:03 d) senior pair - 3:12 e) senior sculls - 3:28 f) junior sculls - 3:29. s.thomas managed win b double , junior b 4 not raced points.


the highest number of trophies won in 2016 royal college under captaincy of kaveen rajapakse,the previous in 2015 since score 48-04,but in 2016 royal managed record breaking score of 50-02 plus in 2015 u16 4 event janaka dezoysa trophy not held in 2015 in 2016 event held , royal bagged victory break year record.


in 2015, first time in royal thomian history, both crews managed clock below 3 minutes @ boat race. royal college 2:56 (praveen hapugalle,prathap perera,amrith fernando,sajid ajmal,kaveen rajapakse) , s.thomas 2:57 (senal senevirathne,suramba serasinghe,ramith nanayakkara,saliya gunasekera,wishmitha peiris).


in 2016,the highest win margin recorded in books royal college won regatta score of 50-02 under captaincy of kaveen rajapakse, s.thomas winning b scull .
