the present day department of physics of cochin university of science , technology first came existence department of physics of ernakulam centre of university of kerala in year 1963. department of physics founded prof. k. venkateswarlu moderate beginning , gradually grew centre of excellence emphasis on teaching , research. today department of physics known within india , abroad contribution in teaching , research. during existence last 50 years, has made rapid strides in realm of research, both in experimental , theoretical physics. major thrust areas of department theoretical physics , material science. research in frontier areas of nanoscience , technology, optoelectronic devices, quantum computing, semiconductor devices, solar cells, holographic materials, high density storage batteries, astrobiology , quantum optics underway in department.

the department has produced innumerable illustrious alumni , many of them placed in different spheres of life throughout globe. department offers post graduate programmes namely m.sc. (physics), m.phil (physics) , ph.d. department of physics recipient of generous financial assistance in form of sponsored projects various agencies viz. ugc, aicte, iucaa, dst, drdo, csir, iuac, dae, kscste , others.

the department possesses following sophisticated instruments research: thickness profilometer, spectrophotometer, fluorimeter, liquid nitrogen plant, high temperature furnace, x-ray diffractometer, nd: yag laser, vacuum unit laser plasma studies, hp 4192 lcr meter, i-v characterization unit (for pn junction), hall measurement system, optical microscope, differential scanning calorimeter, hrxrd, xps, ftir, fesem. these facilities thrown open users within , outside state on nominal charges depending on availability of instrument time.

the department of physics conducts science awareness programme in physics , space quiz called national space olympiad in association iucaa resource centre, cusat , edumithra intellectual services.

department of applied chemistry

the department of applied chemistry established in 1976 support of university grants commission aid in development of industrial belt in greater cochin area providing scientific support , trained personnel industry. department started m.sc programme in applied chemistry in 1971. m.phil programme in chemistry started in 1986. department has served nucleus starting department of polymer science , rubber technology , department of biotechnology, initiating b.tech , m.sc courses.

the department has international collaborations national technical university singapore, kard scientific u.s.a., limerick university, ireland, polish academy of sciences poland, sultan quaboos university muscat, bois state university u.s.a. , university of science malaysia. department organizes outreach programmes school children inculcate aptitude science , conduct such programmes in collaboration kscste, kerala state science , technology museum etc.

the department of mathematics conducts master s degree programme in mathematics , operations research , computer applications along m.phil , phd programmes. research scholars in department in receipt of fellowship government of india funding agencies such university grants commission, council of scientific , industrial research, , national board higher mathematics (nbhm). research activities in analysis, algebra, operator theory, functional analysis, general topology, fuzzy mathematics, graph theory, combinations, convexity theory, fluid dynamics, non-linear waves, stability, stochastic processes in general , random graphs, operations research , history of mathematics.

the department of statistics established in 1996 bifurcating erstwhile school of mathematical sciences. department offers m.sc degree programme in statistics, m.tech in engineering statistics , research leading ph.d degree. in addition traditional teaching in statistics, department actively engaged in research in several areas of statistics

the statistical computing laboratory of department has several licensed software include sas, spss , matlab. department has metrology laboratory sophisticated instruments such cnc trainer, cmm machine , other metrological instruments. there center of population studies established in department aimed @ conducting research in demography , several other fields of social interest. department has close academic interaction university of waterloo, dalhousie university, canada, indian statistical institute, calcutta, university of dresden, germany , university of warwick, united kingdom. consultancy services being offered industrial establishments , r & d institutions in state in field of data analysis, planning of surveys , quality improvement.
