the penn line uses diesel electric locomotives powering trains. electric trains 5-7 cars long (usually made of or kawasaki bilevels). when aem-7s used, used in pairs 5-7 cars because older , weaker newer hhp-8s. however, when there 3-5 cars, 1 aem-7 used. rush hour diesel trains 5 cars long (usually made of or kawasaki bilevels). during day, shorter 3-5 car single level diesel trains brunswick , camden lines used on penn line. weekend penn line trains include single-level bike car specially equipped accommodate bicyclists.
all trains operated in push-pull configuration (with cab-car end towards union station).
all of stations union station halethorpe have high-level platforms, , of subsequent stations west baltimore perryville, exception of penn station, have low-level platforms. precludes use of marc s ex-metra low-level boarding gallery railroad cars on penn line.
