the daily news founded joseph medill patterson in 1919, illustrated daily news. (it not connected earlier new york daily news, founded in 1855, flourished under benjamin wood, , ceased publication in december 1906.) patterson , cousin, robert r. mccormick co-publishers of chicago tribune , grandsons of tribune company founder joseph medill.


when patterson , mccormick not agree on editorial content of chicago paper, 2 cousins decided @ meeting in paris patterson work on project of launching tribune-owned newspaper in new york. on way back, patterson met alfred harmsworth, viscount northcliffe , publisher of daily mirror, london s tabloid newspaper. impressed advantages of tabloid, patterson launched daily news on june 26, 1919.


the daily news not immediate success, , august 1919, paper s circulation had dropped 26,625. still, new york s many subway commuters found tabloid format easier handle, , readership steadily grew. time of paper s first anniversary in june 1920, circulation on 100,000 , 1925, on million. circulation reached peak in 1947, @ 2.4 million daily , 4.7 million on sunday.


the daily news carried slogan new york s picture newspaper 1920 1991, emphasis on photographs, , camera has been part of newspaper s logo day one. paper s later slogan, developed 1985 ad campaign, new york s hometown newspaper , while has been eyes, ears, honest voice of new york . daily news continues include large , prominent photographs, news, entertainment , sports, intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics, sports section, , opinion section.


news-gathering operations were, time, organized using two-way radios operating on 173.3250 mhz (radio station kea 871), allowing assignment desk communicate personnel utilized fleet of radio cars .

in 1982, , again in 1990s during newspaper strike, daily news went out of business. in 1982 instance, parent tribune company offered tabloid sale. in 1991, millionaire robert maxwell offered financial assistance news stay in business. when maxwell died shortly thereafter, news seceded publishing empire, splintered under questions whether maxwell had financial backing sustain it. after maxwell s death in 1991, paper held in bankruptcy existing management, led editor james willse, became interim publisher after buying paper tribune. mort zuckerman bought paper in 1993.


from founding until 1991, daily news owned tribune company. in 1948, news established wpix (channel 11 in new york city), call letters based on news s nickname of new york s picture newspaper ; , later bought became wpix-fm, known wfan-fm. television station became tribune property outright in 1991, , remains in former daily news building; radio station purchased emmis communications, , since 2014 has been owned cbs radio fm simulcast of namesake.


the news maintains local bureaux in bronx, brooklyn, , queens, @ city hall, within 1 police plaza, , @ various state , federal courthouses in city.


in january 2012, former news of world , new york post editor colin myler appointed editor-in-chief of daily news. myler replaced deputy jim rich in september 2015.


on september 4, 2017, tronc, publishing operations of former tribune company (which had spun out publishing assets separate them broadcast assets), announced had acquired daily news. tronc had bought daily news $1, assuming operational , pension liabilities . time of purchase, circulation had dropped 200,000 on weekdays , 260,000 on sundays.
