def fx formed in 1990 in sydney line-up of martyn basha on bass guitar, blake gardner on lead guitar (both ex-bezerk), fiona horne on lead vocals (ex-mothers) , sean lowry on synthesisers, sequencers , samples (ex-king prawn). according australian musicologist, ian mcfarlane, intention outset mix energetic dance beats hardcore grungy rock. add equation lead singer fiona horne s captivating, feline stage presence, , equalled spiralling, trance-inducing blast of electronic dance music. larry van kriedt hidden fifth member on saxophone , sequencers (ex-ac/dc, non stop dancers); co-wrote of band s material.

def fx debut release four-track extended play, water, in june 1991 via phantom records. featured song, surfers of mind , joanna palmer of tharunka described violent whirlpool of high-voltage house metal [horne] puts larynx through militant aerobic workout, while cool delivery of [lowry] s 21st century gospel raps around her. track appeared on national radio station, triple j s listeners poll 1991. toured australia, , promoted band s first music video. water produced nick mainsbridge. @ aria music awards of 1992 ep nominated best independent release , producer of year.

they followed second ep, surge, in november, included track, under blue . third ep, blink (june 1992), included track, sex/game/sucker . gardner replaced on guitar dave stein late in 1992. lowry summarised group s attitude signing major label, important stay independent long enough set parameters of band, came on board clear band , how should marketed.

their first album, light speed collision, released in november 1992 in vinyl-only format via phantom records; appeared in cd format through emi in following february. album included guest vocals new zealand pop singer, margaret urlich. united states version, on rca/bmg in june 1993, band used name, definition fx, avoid confusion band, das efx. reordered tracks , added material 2 of eps. lowry explained nic haygarth of canberra times people misconception because re technology-based band lot of our work , development of songs in studio, suppose there attempt transfer live show record, , might put rough mock-up of song , start p1aying it.

three more eps followed no time (march 1993), space time disco (june) , post moronic (september 1994). @ end of 1993 basha had departed , duties on bass guitar taken van kriedt. post moronic appeared on aria singles chart in top 50. 1 of tracks, masses asses , listed on triple j hottest 100, 1994.

ritual eternal (1995), third album, more experimental: including tracks without standard guitars , others charlie mcmahon on didgeridoo (ex-gondwanaland project), joined def fx on tour. recorded , produced entirely lowry, following cancellation of contract emi, , issued via independent label cicada music , distributed mds. mcfarlane felt cd over-ambitious . ritual eternal introduced new bass guitarist, peter tasker, forced out of band months later , replaced sean fonti (ex-massappeal, caligula). @ aria music awards of 1995 nominated best independent release third album.

in february 1996 issued single, psychoactive summer , reached top 50 on aria charts. followed fourth album, majick, in mid-year, peaked @ no. 21 on aria albums chart. provided 4 singles, , became band s certified release, going gold in 1997. band dissolved in may of year split announced horne on abc-tv s saturday morning youth variety show, recovery.

post break , reunions

fiona horne followed stint def fx musical releases shut , kiss me paul mcdermott , solo single let s go out tonight (both achieving chart success) before subsequently become writer, 11 books, including 2 autobiographies , guides practising of wiccan rituals. actor, performer in reality television both host , contestant; used appear on hamish , andy radio programme. in march 2007 horne released first solo cd, witch web, based on spiritual practice.

sean lowry completed ph.d in 2003 @ university of sydney. lowry academic, writer & visual artist. sean fonti formed primary brother jamie fonti caligula , vocalist, connie mitchell.

in 2012 def fx reunited, horne , basha sole original members, , embarked on national tour in may–june 2012, performing in east coast state capitals. joining pair electronic musician, ant banister (lunar module , clan analogue) on keyboards , vocals , wiley cochrane on guitar appearance jesse basha (son of bassist martyn basha). october november 2013 reformed again, play shows in adelaide, melbourne, newcastle, sydney , brisbane.
