salt marsh in essex
now tide’s task done,
marsh runnels turn , chuckling run
or come standstill,
the level ground them breathless hill.
and run or faint
through mud takes sunset’s paint,
the gullies have worn
shine purple grapes , golden corn.
there several musical settings of poetry, including incidental music composed imogen holst play nicodemus (1937). “christmas day” collection speak earth (1939) proved popular composers , set mervyn roberts (1947), robin milford (1949), neil butterworth (1954), , elizabeth poston (1967).
the work of later years included 2 long religious poems of out of world , (1958), highly regarded @ time, , several prose works dealing botany , landscape. literary reputation being fostered in these years leonard clark, made selections , collections of poetry between 1959-1974. thereafter daughter, had married poet edward lowbury, continued work.
recognition of young s writing came slowly. royal society of literature awarded him benson medal in 1939 , gave him honorary fellowship in 1951. in year received honorary degree university of edinburgh and, in following year, awarded queen s gold medal poetry.
