biography
family

zheng zhenduo born on 19 december 1898 in yongjia, zhejiang province. ancestral home in changle, fujian province. born in poor family. 2 younger sisters, raised mother because father , grandfather died when still teenager.

he named zhenduo (振鐸) grandfather. zhen (振) denotes arousing action , duo (鐸) kind of big bell. grandfather wanted him ring great bell summon , arouse people. besides, grandfather gave him childhood name mu guan (wooden official 木官).

schooling

in 1917, zheng began studying @ beijing railway management school (北京铁路管理传习所) , graduated in march 1921. beyond classroom, read lot of books , developed enormous interest in social sciences, chinese literature , western literature , developed critical mind. during may fourth movement, student representative, spreading news of student movements in beijing. in 1919, helped publish 2 magazines called xin shehui (新社會 new society ) , jiuguo jiangyan zhoukan (救國講演周報 national salvation speeches weekly ).

in january 1921, zheng zhenduo , twelve others, including mao dun , ye shengtao founded earliest literary society of new literature movement, wenxue yanjiu hui (literary research association 文學研究會, known literary association), advocated realism , opposed art art s sake.

careers throughout life

zheng had been journalist, modern writer, archeology , literature scholar throughout life.

in may 1921, zheng helped set drama society called minzhong xiju (demotic opera troupe 民眾戲劇社) mao dun, ye shengtao, chen dabei, ouyang yuqian, xiong foxi , other writers. published monthly magazine named xiju (drama 戲劇) on 31 may in same year.

in 1922, zheng established first magazine children, children s world (兒童世界) in january 1923, became chief editor of monthly magazine of novel, fiction monthly (小說月報). after may 30 incident in 1925, helped founding newspaper called gongli ribao (公理日報). on, wrote many books including zhongguo wenxue shi (history of chinese literature 中國文學史, 1938) , 1943 diary (1943年日記).

zheng had been scholar giving lectures in universities, researcher of academy , journalist since 1931. taught in department of chinese in yenching university, in jinan university 1935 1941 dean of faculty of arts , in peking university since 1953. after 1949, became secretary culture department , cultural heritage department in china.

exile france

in april 1927, chiang kai-shek launched sudden attack on thousands of suspected communists in area controlled. many innocent students , movement activists killed. writers, including zheng, under political pressure. therefore, left family france in may 1927. during years living in paris, kept mailing diary wife, published book named ouxing riji (diary of travels in europe 歐行日記).

return china

he continued journalistic career after coming china in 1929 , founded jiuwang ribao (救亡日報). in october 1945, founded weekly magazine called democracy (民主) oppose chiang kai-shek s pro-us policy , urge people stop civil wars.

cultural preservation

due invasion of japanese troops, shanghai besieged starting 1937 , many significant cultural assets lost. in light of this, zheng devoted himself rescue , protection of aged chinese documents , antiques. chen founding member of shanghai rare book preservation society , leader. disguising himself staff member in stationery store, named chan sixun (陳思訓), managed save many aged books damage or loss outside world.

death

on 18 october 1958, zheng led national cultural delegates visit arabia , afghanistan. died in plane crash in chuvashia, soviet union during journey.
