cloche hats made of felt conformed head, , typically designed worn low on forehead, wearer s eyes below brim. in later years, summer cloche might made sisal or straw. cloches made of beads or lace evening wear, cocktails, dancing or bridal wear.


the contemporaneous art deco style influenced outline of brim or style of seams. while commonly worn plain, allowing cut , shape of well-made hat take precedence, cloche decorated appliqués, embroidery, jeweled brooches, scarves, fans of feathers, or similar accents. end of 1920s, became fashionable turn brims on cloche hats upwards. style remained prevalent until cloche hat became obsolete around 1933 or 34.


often, different styles of ribbons affixed hats indicated different messages wearer. several popular messages included: arrow-like ribbon indicated girl single had given heart someone, firm knot signaled marriage or flamboyant bow indicated wearer single , interested in mingling.
