at time, o neill s brother, daniel o neill, publisher, editor, , owner of pittsburgh dispatch, , o neill started work on paper reporter. worked @ paper editorial writer until 1874, when began practicing law. admitted bar of allegheny county , practiced in both county , city courts 3 years.


in 1875, elected city councilman of pittsburgh, political office ever accepted. when brother died on 30 january 1877, o neill took on management of paper, position retained until again retiring newspaper work in march 1902. in addition practicing law , work in journalism, o neill active investor in real estate , industry, accumulating fortune @ death estimated @ $8,000,000.


eugene married daniel s widow, mrs emily martha “emma” (seely) o neill. had no children. couple lived in family home linden house in pittsburgh, located on corner of penn avenue , linden street. o neill died on 26 november 1926 @ st luke s hospital in new york city after 3 month illness. cause of death pneumonia. left son, florence o neill of paris, france, , daughter, emily o neill davies, , 3 grandchildren. after death, interred @ allegheny cemetery.
