Technique Buddy_breathing

i m out of air: cutting or chopping throat flat hand.

give me air (emergency implied): pointing mouth thumb , fingers together, moving hand , forth short distance.

buddy breathing initialised diver out of air emergency signalling diver standard hand signal give me air . signal made holding fingers , thumb of 1 hand together, pointing them @ mouth , making repeated movements of finger tips towards mouth.

the donor expected take breath , pass his/her demand valve (or mouthpiece in case of twin-hose regulator) recipient, expected take 2 breaths , pass back. in reality recipient take more 2 breaths, , donor should expect , relax minimize metabolic rate. donor should retain grip on demand valve throughout buddy breathing process, panicked recipient may fail give back. reasonably reliable way of keeping control of demand valve grasp hose firmly in fist connects demand valve. provides control allows recipient use purge button if needed.

a pattern of 2 breaths per diver should established possible , terminate dive , start ascent possible, air consumption while buddy breathing more double normal rate. demand valves drain correctly if hose user s right, , in these cases divers should align allow convenient movement of demand valve donor recipient , back. when divers need ascend or swim horizontally, requires co-ordination , skill, best practiced in low hazard environment.

training

a study ucla diving safety research project suggests 20 successful repetitions of buddy breathing during training of entry level students needed reasonable expectation of success without errors, , retesting after 3 months without reinforcing practice showed degraded performance , procedural errors. higher level of training provided recreational diver training organisations. skill reliable in emergency, periodic reinforcement necessary, , familiarisation particularly valuable when buddies dive first time.
